*these four sites were added to our pedestrian counts in December of 2007.

When comparing 2007 and 2008 data points, please note that the specific days when the counts were done each year may vary. Although the time difference could be as little as a week, the total numbers for the sites could be affected by the variance.

The Pedestrian Count Study, initiated in December 2006, was developed as a tracking protocol to assist with retail recruitment efforts for Downtown Seattle. Its primary focus is to measure pedestrian traffic volumes and possible seasonal and time of day impacts on traffic flow. To capture these potential variances, the count will be conducted three times a year (summer tourist, holiday and spring seasons), and regularly tracked over time.

Pedestrian Count Methodology
Data are collected manually by the Research & Market Analysis group using hand counters. Fourteen representative and dispersed locations throughout Center City Seattle are included in the sample. The data are collected in the course of a single day, in three shifts: morning rush (7:30am to 9:00am), lunch time (11:30am to 1:00pm) and evening rush (4:00pm to 5:30pm).

Please contact Downtown Seattle Association’s Research & Market Analysis team at
206-623-0340 for more information regarding Pedestrian Counts.
